A teacher once shared that in Zen, we talk about ‘ma’ as an interval of time and space to indicate that more is about to happen. When we are staring at a wood block, gathering vegetables from a garden, preparing for zazen service……..sensing the moment as it is, forms begin to kindle. In this silent aloneness of being, intimacy flourishes. When present in this space directly with original mind (prior to conceptual thought), the five senses warm the space and embodied potency naturally arises.
In my studio, I often have to ‘work’ at being present with all my senses, to paint without eyes. In this blind state I feel potency streaming through my body. Sometimes this happens naturally, however, most days I’m stuck on thought patterns, worries, and distractions that often deflate potency.
